Rapid urban growth brought several challenges for Rajkot, including traffic congestion, unauthorized street vending, inefficient monitoring of public spaces, and the need for improved coordination between different civic departments. Traditional monitoring methods were unable to provide real-time visibility or enable authorities to respond quickly to urban issues.
One of the key challenges addressed through the project was managing unauthorized hawking activities in busy areas of the city. Street vendors operating outside designated zones often contributed to road congestion, restricted pedestrian movement, and impacted overall urban mobility. Since an AI-based smart hawking prevention system was among the first initiatives of its kind in the country, there were limited benchmarks or reference models available during implementation.
The project also involved significant infrastructure challenges, including deploying technology solutions across busy city roads with dense underground utilities, managing civil work requirements, and coordinating with multiple stakeholders while minimizing disruption to citizens and businesses.
The Rajkot Smart City Project was a transformative urban development initiative undertaken to enhance city management, improve citizen services, and enable technology-driven governance. As part of the Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission, the project aimed to create a digitally connected and intelligent urban ecosystem by integrating advanced technologies across public safety, urban management, and civic services. Allied Digital, as part of the consortium with BSNL, played a key role as the technology implementation partner and contributed towards building critical smart city infrastructure for Rajkot.
The project focused on deploying intelligent solutions such as a Smart Illegal Hawking Prevention System, centralized Data Centre infrastructure, Command & Control capabilities, and digital platforms to improve monitoring, decision-making, and operational efficiency. By combining artificial intelligence, video analytics, resilient network infrastructure, and automation, the initiative enabled Rajkot to address urban challenges through innovative and citizen-centric solutions.
Allied Digital, as part of the consortium delivering the Rajkot Smart City Project, implemented a comprehensive technology framework designed to enhance urban governance and operational efficiency. The solution was based on a high-performance, highly available, and scalable architecture incorporating advanced technologies and enterprise-grade infrastructure.
A key component of the project was the implementation of the AI-enabled Smart Illegal Hawking Prevention System. Allied Digital deployed AI-based IP cameras across designated hawker zones to automatically detect unauthorized vending activities outside permitted areas. The system generated real-time alerts through web and mobile applications, enabling municipal authorities to take timely action.
The solution included the setup of a complete Data Centre infrastructure, including design, installation, testing, commissioning, and integration of required technology components. Allied Digital established the underlying data infrastructure required to support smart city applications and ensure reliable operations.
The project leveraged intelligent cameras, video analytics, virtualization technologies, and a 100% terrestrial wired network architecture to ensure reliable connectivity, optimized bandwidth utilization, and efficient data management. The integrated ecosystem enabled centralized monitoring and improved visibility for city administrators.
The Rajkot Smart City Project enabled the city administration to adopt a more proactive and technology-driven approach towards urban management. The AI-powered Smart Illegal Hawking Prevention System helped reduce traffic disruptions, improve pedestrian movement, and enhance enforcement efficiency by enabling real-time detection and alerts.
The implementation strengthened the city’s digital backbone through a secure and scalable Data Centre infrastructure, supporting various smart city applications and improving operational coordination across departments. The project demonstrated how artificial intelligence, automation, and integrated technology platforms can be leveraged to solve complex urban challenges.
The Smart Hawking System implemented under the project received national recognition for its innovative application of emerging technologies in citizen-centric governance. The initiative was recognized with awards including the National e-Governance Award (Silver Category) and ET Government DIGITECH recognition for AI-enabled smart city innovation.
Through this engagement, Allied Digital demonstrated its capabilities as a Master Systems Integrator in delivering large-scale smart city solutions that combine AI, IoT, infrastructure management, and digital governance to create safer and more efficient urban environments.
